Everyone agrees that a wedding is the bride's day and she should look gorgeous. If that means that she wants curly hair and not her usual straight hairstyle, let it be and get her a bunch of sexy curly wigs to choose from. It is her day and she should get whatever she wants including her choice of dresses for the bridesmaids.
But what would you do if you do think that the bridesmaids' dresses are not appropriate? You have to deal with it in such a way that both of you get what you want without you offending or hurting the bride. Given below are 3 tips that you will find helpful when you are trying to get your point across to the bride.
Have A Girls' Night
When you are a bridesmaid, you have to dress accordingly to please the bride and to look good. Pleasing the bride does not mean that you dress up as a meringue. To avoid this, you have to be involved with the process of selection of dresses from the beginning. But how would you do this without offending the bride? Why don't you suggest a girl's night out or a pajama party where you can have wine to relax you and can go through magazines with the bride?
Make a few subtle suggestions when you are looking at dresses for the bridesmaid. As you go through the magazine, let her know what you like and what you don't. Follow this up with a shopping session for just the two of you. You can try some dresses and the bride can approve or disapprove. This way, you both get to choose and can decide upon one that is perfect.
Make Constructive Suggestions
Ensure that any suggestions that you make are constructive. Remember that the point is not to upset the bride but to choose a middle path that will make both of you happy. For example, if the bride wishes for you to dress in peach taffeta and you don't wish it because of a dislike don't make too much of a fuss.
On the other hand, if you are allergic to the fabric, you can state that as a valid reason and choose a fabric that you will feel comfortable in. Try to compromise with the bride and make only constructive suggestions that will only make her day better.
Who Is Paying The Bills?
As per the unwritten rulebook for bridesmaids' dresses, the bride usually pays the bills but sometimes, the maid of honor pays for her dress and the bride pays for the other bridesmaids. As the bridesmaids can keep their dresses even though they are not paying for it, they try to choose dresses that can be used after the wedding.
When you are choosing a dress, consult the bride and decide on a dress that both of you like.
You may not like others to choose what you wear but when you are a bridesmaid, remember that it is not your day but the bride's day. She may be your best friend but on her wedding day, she gets to choose.
